Getaway – Macau – The Food (Part 1)
July 15, 2009
This is an awfully outdated post. I apologized for my lag of updates, partly due to not being able to attain internet acess at my apartment and mostly due to my laziness. I admit, I am having so much fun that I become… well, lazy to update. However, I still dutifully upload photo albums of the trip onto my Facebook account! So… I guess I’m not that lazy afterall. xD
As much as I want to update this blog more frequently, but to pick through all the photos that I’ve taken and to select just a few to share is seriously not an easy task. So I’ve decided to split the section into 2 – the food section and the tour section – hopefully it will be easier for me to share the stuff. (:
A little background before I start:
I left Singapore on 27th June, taking the budget airline and landed on Macau at around 2pm. I spent 2 nights at Macau before taking a ferry to Hong Kong, in which I will be staying there for slightly more than a month, until 5th August. And so if you are reading this, I am typing this post in Hong Kong right now. (:
While my other friends are here in Hong Kong for a summer course, I’m just here for R&R. xD “Eat, shop, play and enjoy.” That’s what I will be doing mainly in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, there’s no oven here in our apartment, so I won’t be able to bake stuff here, so it will be free of baking entries for this period. However, I will still try to blog more frequently about the stuff that I eat and see here. (:
Without further delay, I guess I will start introducing the food that I’ve eaten in Macau for the first day! (:
After landing in Macau and checking into our hotel, we’re famished by then. There weren’t any food served on budget airline and with four straight hours deprived of food and water, our stomaches are just roaring with hunger and thirst. And so we start our search for food. We ate this at the first Tea Restaurant (茶餐厅) that we saw in Macau. Here’s the food! (:

Pork Chop Noodle Soup

Curry Pork Noodle Soup

Pig Intestine Noodle Soup
Heard of the saying that whenever you’re hungry, no matter what you eat (as long as it’s edible), it will all taste yummy? The noodles were pretty good but we weren’t very full after eating it, so after that, we went off in search of all the reputable and delicious food in Macau. Luckily we managed to eat these before the shop closes!
This shop sells Bird’s Nest Egg Tarts and Pork Chop Bun. I’ve heard of normal egg tarts and Portuguese egg tarts, this is the first that I’ve seen and tasted a Bird’s Nest Egg Tart. I’ve never tried Bird’s Nest before actually. My mom told me that when I was young, I vomited upon tasting Bird’s Nest. Well, I guess my taste buds are unable to appreciate such expensive delicacy at that time. These egg tarts aren’t very pricey and they are really yummy. The crust is very flaky and the filling… I have no words for it. The filling is sweet and it blends well with the flaky crust. As I’ve just mentioned earlier, I haven’t eaten Bird’s Nest before so I’m not sure whether the filling has the Bird’s Nest taste, but nonetheless, these egg tarts are definitely worth a try as I’ll never find it in Singapore.

Bird’s Nest Egg Tarts
As for the Pork Chop Bun, it’s just having a thin slice of pork chop fried and sandwiched in a bun. It’s simple, but the pork chop we ate there is tender and juicy and full of flavour, definitely worth a try.
Later in the night, we went to Seng Cheong Restaurant at Taipa. As we were still full, we ordered two of their very famous dishes

Water Crab Porridge
The porridge is soft, mushy and watery, with the crab being a water crab (though it tasted a lot like flower crab to me). The porridge is very flavourful and… I don’t know, it is definitely a must try in the restaurant!

Cuttlefish Balls
WARNING: These are not your typical store-bought cuttlefish balls! These cuttlefish balls are all hand-made and deep-fried into perfection. The meat inside is tender and chewy and flavourful, unlike those weird cuttlefish balls bought in supermarkets. I’m never a fan of cuttlefish balls until I ate them – they are soooo good!
So, in any case that you are interested in hunting down these food, just take a walk down Rua do Cunha (官也街) at Taipa. They have tons of good food to offer and most are priced at reasonable prices. But then again, who would mind paying just a little bit more for good food?
Thus, FOODIES, if you are ever in Macau, remember to go there! You’ll never regret it… though the only possible regret is that you can’t stay there forever and eat the food there. (;
Till then!

hahaha they have the cuttlefish balls in hongkong as well. it’s in one of the small restaurants at causeway bay i think. and they’re known for the balls as well!
ENJOYING HUH. haha. i wan har gao siew mai from HK!
