I was feeling a little fanciful the day I baked Jamie Oliver’s chocolate cake, so I scooped out some batter and baked them into cupcakes.

And then I was feeling even more fanciful that I decided to cut out a cone, fill the hole with chocolate ganache, lop 2/3 of the cone off (and devouring them in the process), split the cut cone into 2, replace it on the ganache and decorate with sprinkles to make them look like… butterflies!

Wow, that’s a mouthful!

These are inspired from a childhood treat that my mom used to buy for my brother and I on weekends – the original version should be a butter cake with a whipped cream filling and a dollop of jam in the middle – but I was too lazy to make a butter cake just for this, so chocolate cake is the way to go. Butter cake would definitely work better as the colour contrast will be better, but everyone loves chocolate, so don’t think anyone will reject these cakes ;)

Choose your favourite cake, favourite frosting and bake away!

On to the step-by-step photos!

First bake some cupcakes!

Once the cupcakes are baked and have cooled down completely, get a small knife and cut a small cone.

These “holes” will be filled with your favourite filling – it can be ganache, butterceam, or simply sweetened whipped cream!

Lop the bottom of the cone off and cut it into half – these will become the wings of the butterflies.

Fill the cupcake with your favourite filling the place the “wings” on top of the filling at an angle.

I would actually suggest using a filling of a contrasting colour so that the butterfly is more obvious, but ganache was all I had (plus I was too lazy to make a fresh batch of buttercream) so I decided to just stick with it.

To make the butterflies more obvious, I covered the middle with sprinkles!

Dust with icing sugar and serve – pretty and adorable!

Here are some combinations that I’ve thought of:

If you’ve tried any other tasty combinations, do let me know ;) Happy baking!

  1. Lovely and cute cupcakes! I have always wanted to make butterfly cupcakes, years and years ago!! When I first started collecting cookbooks on baking (decades ago!! ), butterfly cupcakes are really popular back then! I guess that they will “never get out of fashion”!!
Hope you are enjoying your holiday right now! Busy clicking away! Have fun!

  2. I love this chocolate variation of the Butterfly Buns we had as children. I think these will go down well with my Grandson. Roll on his next visit and some baking time. Hope your hols are going/have gone well :)
